007JL What Is Handicap in Betting: Reading +1.5 and -1.5
A handicap adds or subtracts goals or points from one side before the bet is settled. +1.5 wins if your side loses by one or wins or draws; -1.5 wins only if your side wins by two or more.

What is handicap in betting? It is a head start written into the bet: the bookmaker adds a number to one side’s score, or takes it away, and settles your bet on the adjusted result. The line is the number, and the sign tells you which side receives it. A plus sign gives goals, points or games to the side you back, and a minus sign takes them away.
Every worked amount on this page is an example with round numbers, not a price from any lobby. Read the tables first, then check the same line against the settlement rules on your own betslip. The wider picture of how a sportsbook page is laid out sits on the 007JL betting reference.
What is handicap in betting? The line as a head start
A handicap exists because two sides are rarely equal. Without it the stronger team is a heavy favourite and the bet is dull. With it, the favourite starts one or two goals behind on paper, and the weaker team starts ahead, so the bet becomes close to even again.
| Line shown | What it does to your side | Your side wins the bet if |
|---|---|---|
| +1.5 | Adds 1.5 to your score | It wins, draws, or loses by exactly 1 |
| +0.5 | Adds 0.5 to your score | It wins or draws |
| -0.5 | Takes 0.5 from your score | It wins |
| -1.5 | Takes 1.5 from your score | It wins by 2 or more |
| -2.5 | Takes 2.5 from your score | It wins by 3 or more |
Add the line to your side’s real score, compare it with the opponent’s real score, and the higher figure wins. Because the line ends in .5, the two figures can never tie.
Handicap 1.5 meaning: the +1.5 side
Handicap 1.5 meaning, in one sentence: your side may lose the match by a single goal and your bet still pays. The +1.5 line is the cushion side. It loses only when the side you backed is beaten by two goals or more.
| Final margin for your side | Adjusted result | Bet on +1.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Wins by 2 or more | Ahead after the line | Wins |
| Wins by 1 | Ahead after the line | Wins |
| Draw | +1.5 ahead | Wins |
| Loses by 1 | +0.5 ahead | Wins |
| Loses by 2 | 0.5 behind | Loses |
| Loses by 3 or more | Behind | Loses |
Example: you stake ₱100 on a team at +1.5 and the price is decimal 1.50. The match ends 1-2. Your team lost by one, the adjusted score is 2.5 to 2, and the bet pays ₱150 in total, a profit of ₱50. If it had ended 0-2, the bet loses the ₱100.
Handicap -1.5 meaning: the side that must win clear
Handicap -1.5 meaning is the mirror image: the side you back starts 1.5 goals down on paper, so a narrow win is not enough. You need the match won by two clear goals. A one-goal win, a draw or any defeat loses the bet.
| Final margin for your side | Adjusted result | Bet on -1.5 |
|---|---|---|
| Wins by 3 or more | Ahead after the line | Wins |
| Wins by 2 | 0.5 ahead | Wins |
| Wins by 1 | 0.5 behind | Loses |
| Draw | 1.5 behind | Loses |
| Loses by any margin | Behind | Loses |
Example: a ₱100 stake on a team at -1.5 at decimal 2.80 pays ₱280 in total, a profit of ₱180, only if the match finishes with a margin of two or more. A 2-1 win returns nothing, even though your team won the match. That gap between winning the match and winning the bet is the whole point of the line.
The two sides of one line are opposites. If the +1.5 bet wins, the -1.5 bet on the other team loses, and the reverse, so the pair always splits a stake between them. Pairing opposite sides on purpose is its own topic, covered in how hedge betting works.
Whole-number lines and the refund
A line without .5 can land exactly on the margin. A handicap of -1 on a one-goal win leaves the adjusted score level, and the stake is returned. This is called a push.
| Line | Margin for your side | Result |
|---|---|---|
| -1 | Wins by 2 or more | Wins |
| -1 | Wins by exactly 1 | Stake returned |
| -1 | Draw or loss | Loses |
| +1 | Loses by exactly 1 | Stake returned |
| +1 | Draw, win | Wins |
Handicaps move a result along the scoreboard. A totals bet works on the combined score instead, and that is the subject of the over under line explained. Open any fixture in the lobby’s Sports lane, read the line beside your selection, and check it against these tables before you confirm.
FAQ
What is handicap in betting in simple words?
It is a head start given to one side on paper. The bookmaker adds the line to the final score, and your bet wins or loses on the adjusted result, not the real one.
Can a team lose the match and still win a +1.5 handicap bet?
Yes. Lose by exactly one goal and the adjusted score has you 0.5 ahead, so the +1.5 bet wins. Lose by two or more and it loses.
Why do handicap lines end in .5?
A half line cannot land on the final margin, so there is no refund outcome. Every bet on a .5 line either wins or loses.
Is -1.5 harder to win than +1.5?
It asks more of the side you back. -1.5 needs a win by two clear goals, while +1.5 covers every result except a defeat by two or more. The price on each line reflects that gap.
